Compliance-Only Attitude Towards Sustainability Taken By Business
A survey undertaken by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has found that many businesses are operating on a 'compliance-only' basis when it comes to sustainable business practices.
According to the survey of more than 600 facilities managers, 78% of businesses are driven to act on sustainability by resulting improvements in brand image alone with a similar proportion 77% also doing so to solely comply with Government regulation. The report also finds that there is a short-term approach to sustainability being taken by many businesses with financial decision-makers simply relying on internal ROI figures to determine which projects to go ahead with. The negative impact on businesses taking a 'box-ticking' approach to lifecycle costs of new ventures is underlined by BIFM's Chief Executive, Gareth Tancred, who commented: "... many businesses are missing out on the benefits of long-term sustainability, such as increased competitive advantage, increased productivity, a reduction in costs and ultimately, more efficiency leading to better performance."
